Chipped and fractured teeth top the list of the issues that emergency dentists in Mission Viejo see. Knocked-out teeth and soft tissue injuries also qualify. Here are five signs that you shouldn’t wait to come into our clinic.
A Broken Tooth
You can break a tooth by biting down on a hard candy. We have seen patients who come in with a cracked tooth because they hit a pit or bone in the food they were eating.
If you’ve been involved in a sports injury or a car accident and knocked out or chipped your teeth, a trip to our emergency clinic is in order.
A Swollen Jaw
A swollen jaw can result from a tooth infection that spreads to the tissue in that area. If you’re having difficulty moving your jaw and there’s a significant amount of pain and swelling, you need to see an emergency dentist in Mission Viejo.
Severe Pain From a Toothache
Infection can often be the culprit when people suffer from severe tooth pain. A pocket of pus might fill up around the tooth or gums, and untreated cavities are another reason for this type of intense pain.
A crack or lost filling can even expose a tooth nerve. An abscess not treated at a dental emergency clinic can cause the infection to spread to your sinuses, jawbone, and even the bloodstream.
Bad Breath That Won’t Go Away
Advanced gum disease can be the culprit behind persistent bad breath. When the tooth pulp becomes infected, it becomes an emergency situation that needs urgent treatment.
A root canal or emergency extraction are both possibilities at this point.
A Lost Crown or Filling
As soon as you lose a crown or filling, the inside of your tooth can be exposed, which can lead to nerve damage, pain, and sensitivity. A lost crown can become a problem quickly because the exposed area can collect bacteria and food.
These situations must be treated quickly at an emergency dental clinic to prevent more significant problems.
