Denture Repairs, Relines And Adjustments

Dentures require diligent care just like your natural teeth. You will need to visit your dentist periodically to adjust dentures. By doing so, you keep them proper fit and avoid causing discomfort. If you forget routine adjustments, you will also have difficulty chewing.

When you get new dentures, the first few months are extremely important. It’s when your dentist will make minor adjustments to give your jaw proper shape. Similarly, your dentist may recommend relines and suggest your dentures to be resurfaced after observing the changing contours of your mouth.

Denture repairs and adjustments

If you drop dentures, you may fracture them. With time, your dentures may weaken and a heavy bite can cause them to crack.

When you bite something hard, a tooth may come off the denture. This often results from poorly fitted dentures.

When you notice a crack in your denture or a tooth coming off the denture, it’s time to visit your dentist for dental repairs.

The process for denture repair

Broken base and denture fracture are some of the most common repairs. They can be often done within a day. That means you won’t have to go without your denture for more than only a few hours.

Whether your denture is fractured or has a broken base, the process remains essentially the same. Your dentist will look at your denture and examine it closely. He will determine the issue and decide what needs to be done.

For repairing dentures, your dentist may require you to take impressions, especially when a piece of denture is missing. Sometimes, your dentist may also take an impression of your bottom teeth before sending you to a laboratory with a repair prescription.

After you receive your denture from the lab, your dentist will examine it again and make necessary adjustments. Finally, he will fit the repaired dentures in your mouth.

Relining or rebasing

Poorly fitted dentures can contribute to wear and tear on the bone. It can cause soft tissue in your mouth more quickly and cause erosion. Relining your dentures can minimize this effect and help you maintain high standards of oral health.

There are basic types of relining.

Standard reline: This is the most common reline type. Your dentist will use the same acrylic material as the denture itself. Standard reline is durable and it doesn’t require any special cleaning.
Soft reline: Your dentist will add a soft lining inside the denture. This type of reline makes it more comfortable to wear dentures. It is also difficult to clean and requires special cleaning. Moreover, soft reline is not durable. For this reason, many dentists use soft reline only during the healing time.
The temporary / Short-term soft reline: Your dentist may use a temporary reline during the healing process. This is often the case when you have an immediate denture (same-day-denture). Your dentist will use this reline before replacing it with long-term more durable lining is added to your denture.

The processes for a denture reline

The process for relines is simple. It usually takes one or two appointments.

In most cases, your dentist will have the dentures ready for you on the day of your appointment. However, you will have to wait for the relines to be done before dentures can be adjusted in your mouth.

Your dentist will first modify your denture to prepare it for the impression material. Your dentist may also create a record using greenstick. Your dentist will then take an impression to know exactly how your mouth has changed.

To take the impression, different dentists may choose to use different materials. The most common ones are listed below.

While taking the impression, your dentist will ask you to take a bite and hold the jaws together after placing the material into your mouth. This will make you apply constant pressure to the dentures. It can take anywhere between 2 to 5 minutes to complete the impression-taking process.

For a temporary lining, your dentist will take your impression using a temporary lining material inside of the traditional impression material. Your dentist won’t have to send the denture to the lab. Instead, he will trim off any excess and polish the dentures at the office. The temporary material will harden over time and adjust to your mouth shape automatically.

If the damage is very extensive, you may require a whole new set of dentures. Our dental professionals at 7 Day Dental will know what is required to keep your dentures feeling comfortable and looking great.
