FAQs for Hemisection in Orange County
A hemisection is a dental procedure where a tooth is cut in half, separating it into two halves, each with its crown and root. It is performed on teeth with two roots, such as lower molars, when periodontal disease, decay, or bone loss has affected the area between the roots (bifurcation). Hemisection allows the endodontist to reach and treat the infected area, potentially saving part of the tooth and preventing the need for full extraction.
During a hemisection, the endodontist makes a small incision in the gum to access the deeper structures of the tooth. The roots are then separated, and the infected or decayed tissue is removed. The endodontist evaluates the condition of the roots, saving one or both if possible, or discarding them if they are severely damaged. The area is cleaned, sterilised, and sealed with a temporary filling. After healing, the saved portion is restored with a crown to maintain tooth function.
After a hemisection, you may experience mild bleeding and swelling for the first two days, which is normal unless it becomes severe or persistent. To manage post-procedure care, avoid chewing with the treated tooth and use any prescribed mouthwash to keep the area sanitized. Your endodontist will provide post-care instructions and schedule follow-up appointments to monitor the healing and restoration process, which is essential for a successful recovery.
