Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontics is the dental specialty that is concerned with the treatment of improper bites and crooked teeth. Orthodontists have completed a postdoctoral program in Orthodontics in addition to their doctorate in dentistry. Orthodontic treatment gradually realigns the patient’s teeth and jaw, improving both their appearance and chewing function. Orthodontists usually use some type of braces and/or durable plastic aligners to straighten a patient’s teeth.

Orthodontic treatment is not just for improving your appearance. Crooked teeth or a misaligned jaw cannot chew food properly. As a result, you tend to swallow big pieces of food, which can lead to digestive problems and malabsorption of nutrients. In addition, badly aligned teeth are harder to clean and that can promote tooth decay and gum disease. Fortunately, treating this problem can also give you a beautiful smile!

At 7 Day Dental, we believe that our patients are our partners in ensuring the success of orthodontic and other dental treatments, and we spend time educating them. After a thorough examination, our orthodontists will talk to you about your condition and what can be done to treat it. Prior to deciding on the treatment plan, our experts will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the different options available for your situation. We use only high quality orthodontic appliances to attain your desired results.

After a course of active orthodontic treatment, patients will typically wear retainers or additional aligners, which help to maintain the teeth in their improved positions while surrounding bone reforms around them. The retainers are generally worn full-time for a period, then part-time (during nightly sleep) for as long as the orthodontist recommends.

In the past, orthodontic patients were primarily teens and pre-teens. However, in recent years, the client profile has dramatically changed, with adults making up 20-30% of orthodontic patients in the United States. In addition, there is a new development that treats younger children in a way that naturally guides the incoming permanent teeth into their proper position. At 7 Day Dental we use the Healthy Start System™ to treat children. In addition to aligning teeth, Healthy Start corrects sleep disordered breathing which is a major cause of attention deficit disorders, daytime fatigue, and learning problems. The main types of orthodontic alignment systems available at 7 Day Dental:

  •  Traditional metal braces and ceramic braces
  •  Damon Braces
  • Lingual braces
  • Clear plastic aligners (Invisalign, for example)

TMJ Disorders

Orthodontists also treat disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJD). Symptoms include pain or tenderness in the jaw and, sometimes, in or around the ear. There may be pain or discomfort while chewing and locking of the jaw. Often, patients with this condition have a tendency to clench their jaw and grind their teeth while sleeping. Patients are also likely to have malocclusion. Depending on the particular situation, orthodontists may treat the condition with a jaw splint, as well as braces, retainers or nighttime appliances.
