First off, it’s important to understand that endodontics concerns itself with the dental pulp in your teeth. One of the treatments that is very common goes by the name we all know of as root canal therapy.

Here’s what you can expect from this common treatment that’s designed to save your teeth and help you enjoy a beautiful smile for a lifetime.

  • First things first as they say and that means your dentist will want to check your medical history and the tooth that is giving you the trouble. It’s important to establish that you are suitable for root canal therapy beforehand.
  • Once you’ve been okayed to undergo the procedure, local anaesthetic will be applied around the tooth so you won’t feel any pain.  If there is a severe infection and the pulp in the tooth is quite inflamed, there is no need to worry because our Anaheim endodontics specialists will wait until you feel numb before they begin.
  • A dental dam is placed around the area where the affected tooth is to be operated on. This prevents infection and provides a clean safe environment to carry out the root canal therapy.
  • Next, a small hole is drilled into the tooth so the pulp chamber and root canals are exposed and can be operated on safely.
  • The tissue that is diseased or dying is removed next. Once again,  there is no pain during this part of the procedure since the whole area has been numbed.
  • Next, the root canals are filled and compacted with a specially designed sealant and then they are packed with a special material that prevents any further infection.
  • Finally, the hole that was used to access the root canal is sealed and the procedure is finished.

Finally, some kind of permanent crown is needed at the top to fill in the areas of your tooth that were lost during the root canal therapy. It’s very important that all the areas of the root canal gets sealed during the procedure so there is no further possibility of infection.
