In-Office Whitening

The procedure – How it’s done

A protective dam or gingival barrier gel is used to protect the patient’s gums. Then one of two types of whitening products is applied to the teeth.

One of the products works best and fastest with a light shining on the tooth surfaces while it “cures.” The other does not use light and simply works over time.

After 15-20 minutes, the bleach and gingival barrier are removed, and teeth are rinsed. This procedure is repeated, for a total of up to 3 applications.

At Home Treatments

There are two basic types of at-home whitening systems. The maximum effect is achieved with custom trays, but you can also use the famous whitening strips.

Custom trays that are made to fit over the patient’s teeth. The dentist takes an impression and then fashions the trays on the premises while the patient waits or has the patient return at a convenient time to get their trays.

At home, the patient applies the whitening gel as instructed to the trays and wears them daily, either for a couple of hours or overnight, for several weeks.

2- Whitening strips
For those who want a simpler and less expensive home treatment, there are whitening strips that are applied to the teeth and worn daily as specified in the instructions. The strips are usually not as effective as the trays, but they work well for many people.

Effect on tooth restorations
Not all bleaching solutions will whiten restorations that have become stained. If a patient has old restorations that need to be replaced, it is best to do so after the whitening treatment so that the color of the restoration can be matched to the newly whitened teeth.

Side effects
The most common side effect is temporary increased tooth sensitivity, especially to hot and cold foods. This usually goes away shortly after the whitening treatment is completed. If you have any other reactions to whitening treatment, you should discontinue use and contact the dentist immediately.
