Traditional Gum Therapy

Traditional Gum Therapy

Many adults in the US are currently suffering from gum disease ranging from gum inflammation to serious periodontal disease. Gum disease can damage your gum and you can even lose your teeth.

When you see symptoms of gum disease, it’s important to consult your dentist for gum therapy. Depending on your condition, your dentist will choose a traditional non-surgical or surgical therapy. In some cases, your dentist may opt for the latest laser therapy.

Non Surgical Treatment

The first stage of traditional gum therapy for gum disease is deep cleaning.  The goal is to remove as much of the bacterial plaque as possible and to disinfect the pockets. Before starting, the dentist will measure the depth of the pockets. Then they will do scaling, which removes plaque and tartar (calculus) from the surfaces of the teeth. This is followed by root planning, a procedure which scrapes a layer of bacteria-impregnated cementum from the surface of a tooth root and smoothes the surface to help the gums reattach to the teeth.

When a patient had very deep pockets and irritated gums, 7 Day Dental dentist may apply a topical anesthetic below the gum line so that the patient won’t feel pain during the procedure.

Following scaling and root planning, the pockets are irrigated with a disinfecting solution of chlorhexadine. This is usually followed by applying a topical antibiotic gel which helps fight bacteria while the gums heal. The scheduling of future treatments will be determined by the severity of the condition.

Surgical Treatment

In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary. The most common traditional surgery is commonly called flap surgery or pocket reduction surgery. The gums are lifted back and the area is thoroughly cleaned with scaling and planing. Then the gums are sutured back in place such that the tissue fits snugly around the tooth.

Another technique involves tissue grafts using tissue from the roof of the mouth to reinforce thin gums or fill in where tissue was lost. In addition, bone grafts may be used to replace lost bone and stimulate bone regeneration.

Laser surgery

One of the more recent innovations is a type of surgery without any cutting, using laser for gum surgery. Your dentist will advise you on the best treatment for your particular situation and also give you instructions for home care. It is very important that you follow the treatment plan to restore your oral health and prevent a deterioration leading to tooth loss and other health problems.
